Former Nottingham Forest winger Gil Dias scored a stunning goal in the Europa League for Olympiacos last night.

The 22-year-old put Pedro Martins’ side ahead just before half-time against Dynamo Kyiv. However, the Ukrainian side equalised late on in the second period through Benjamin Verbič. It’s a shame for Dias that his strike wasn’t enough to secure the win.

Having opened his account against Lamia in the Greek Cup last week, this was the perfect way for Dias to build on that. Olympiacos are now still in with a chance of securing qualification to the Round of 16 in the Europa League.

He’s now scored twice in four appearances since making the switch to Evangelos Marinakis’ other footballing venture. It’s fair to say that he seems more suited to the style of football in the Greek Super League in comparison to the Championship.

According to the Telegraph, the Reds had the option to make Dias’ loan permanent in the summer should they have wished. However, due to the fact he struggled to make an impact at the City Ground, he ended up returning to Monaco earlier than planned.

Wasn’t suited to the Championship

It wouldn’t be a surprise if some supporters believe the winger should’ve been given more time to prove himself on Trentside. However, the reality is that his talent was already evident. He did enough to show that he had a lot of potential to become a top player. It just wasn’t going to work out for him in the Championship.

He lacked key characteristics which are required to be a success in the division. The most notable one being his lack of physicality. On multiple occasions, Dias was too easily barged off the ball, which prevented him from doing what he does best. Not only this, but he didn’t seem to have the required attitude when the Reds found themselves up against it.

It’s understandable why some supporters find it frustrating to see Dias playing well elsewhere. Although, it’s hardly a surprise. When it was announced that he had joined Olympiacos, it seemed a good fit. He’ll be hoping he can continue to enhance his pedigree before the end of the season.

As the winger’s spectacular strike was shared all over social media, Seat Pitch rounded up exactly what Reds supporters had to say about Dias.
