Nottingham Forest midfielder João Carvalho has struggled to get into the starting line-up since Martin O’Neill’s arrival.

The £13.2 million club-record signing has started just one game under the Northern Irishman so far.

Club legend Kenny Burns has recently spoken in the Nottingham Post about the midfielder’s future. He wouldn’t be surprised to see the Portuguese Under-21 international leave in the summer, which could see the Reds make a significant loss.

He said: “I’d always rated Carvalho in the majority of games I’ve seen him play this season. But I’ve got to be honest, against Aston Villa, I thought he was a disgrace on what turned out to be a bad night.

“He wasn’t the only one who was pretty poor that night. It was Carvalho that disappointed me the most though.

“We know he’s shown flashes and scored some brilliant goals at times. Consistency is the key and he just doesn’t have it.

“Martin admitted that he’d had a good impact against the Tigers. I just thought against Villa it looked like he couldn’t be bothered.”

It’s difficult to predict exactly how this situation will play out over the summer. The club’s hierarchy is unlikely to want to make a significant loss on a player that still has so much potential.

Carvalho has found it more difficult to make an impact recently because he hasn’t been given many opportunities to do so. He has found it difficult to find a way into the system that O’Neill has implemented.

Aitor Karanka’s system allowed the midfielder to flourish in his favoured position. But he’s going to have to adapt his game if he wants to force his way back into the starting line-up under O’Neill.

‘Super footballer’, ‘Undeniable talent’

There’s no doubt that these comments about the midfielder sparked a huge debate on social media. Seat Pitch have rounded up exactly what Reds supporters are saying.
