Another day, another report regarding the future of Joao Carvalho at Nottingham Forest.
Greek outlet SDNA, who covered initial interest from Olympiakos in the Portuguese, are stirring the pot again.
It is claimed that the Reds’ £13 million record signing remains on the radar of those in continental Europe.
Evangelos Marinakis is a man in the middle here.
As owner of the two sides on opposing ends of the rumour, he is in a difficult position.
Where would he prefer Carvalho to be turning out in 2019-20?
Only he can say.
Marinakis is, however, not the man who could bring the speculation to a close.
Martin O’Neill is.
The Reds boss has fanned the flames around a mercurial playmaker.
Regular spells on the bench for Carvalho lit the fuse.
Cryptic answers to questions on the 22-year-old kept the fires burning.
O’Neill said in the Nottingham Post back in April: “I’ve definitely had no conversations with anyone concerning him at this minute.
“These are all things for the next few weeks. But he’s definitely a talented player.”
No questioning that assessment.
Where, though, does that talent fit into O’Neill’s plans?
If at all.
Carvalho has done his bit to try and quash the rumours.
Towards the end of the 2018-19 campaign, he told the club’s official website: “I want to score more and assist more and I want to beat all my personal records next season.
“This season has been a good season but I want to do better.
“I know I can do it so I hope I will play more and get more goals and assists to help the team.”
No exit hint there.
Which is precisely what everybody wanted to hear.
We are, however, back in transfer silly season.
Gossip columns need filling and big names generate intrigue.
Carvalho is not one.
Especially with questions also being asked of Joe Lolley’s future on Trentside.
Losing one creative influence would be bad.
Seeing two head for the exits does not bear thinking about.
What we need now is clarity.
Statements of intent from those at the top of the food chain.
O’Neill is the man calling the shots.
What say you, Martin?
