Bristol City winger Callum O’Dowda has heaped praise on Martin O’Neill, amid reports touting him for a potential move to Nottingham Forest.

O’Neill was unable to guide the Reds into the play-offs last season. The Reds finished eight points off, and the Northern Irishman will be looking to ensure they forge a stronger push for promotion next season. One way of ensuring this is by improving his current attacking options.

And has O’Dowda just hinted that he wants to join the Reds and help them push for promotion to the Premier League?

The 24-year-old has been a key player for the Robins over recent years. He hasn’t made an appearance since the March 12 against Ipswich Town. However, in the 31 appearances he made in the Championship last season, he picked up four goals and four assists. He has proven on numerous occasions that he’s a quality player at this level.

And Forest, Leeds United and Stoke City were all touted as potential destinations for O’Dowda by Bristol Live a couple of weeks ago.

O’Dowda now seemed to have dropped a hint that he would be interested in linking up with O’Neill at the City Ground. It was the Northern Irishman who handed the winger his Republic of Ireland debut in October 2016.

Speaking to Bristol Live, the winger feels that O’Neill got the best out of him. He said: “I think with Martin it was more that he made me feel like a better player than I actually am.

“That’s what I noticed. I would be going out to training probably thinking that I was better than I was.

“He was, in my eyes, a very good manager.”

It’s easy to see why a number of Bristol City supporters are concerned by these latest comments. His future at Ashton Gate looks increasingly uncertain as he has just one year left on his current contract.

It remains to be seen whether or not he does move on to pastures new this summer. However, he’d certainly be an astute addition for the Reds. O’Neill is in need of attacking reinforcements and O’Dowda would fit the bill perfectly.
