Nottingham Forest are interested in landing free agent defender Mehdi Zeffane, according to Nottinghamshire Live.

The Algeria international is busy preparing for Friday’s African Nations Cup Final against Senegal – alongside Forest midfielder Adlene Guedioura.

Zeffane is without a club following his departure from Rennes at the end of last season. In four years with the Ligue 1 outfit, he played 66 games.

The 27-year-old worked with Reds boss Sabri Lamouchi during his time in France and a reunion could be on the horizon.

Forest aren’t the only interested party, however. Norwich, Fiorentina and Espanyol are also keen to land the player who is available for nothing.

The newly-promoted Canaries could now be out of the running, however, having signed former Forest loanee Sam Byram.

With the 25-year-old now definitely not re-signing for the Reds, it leaves Lamouchi with a void to fill.

Tendayi Darikwa is the only senior right-back option at the club, with academy graduate Jayden Richardson acting as an understudy on the club’s pre-season tour to Greece.

The Seat Pitch Summary

It is a fair suggestion that Forest do need another right-back.

Darikwa has proved fairly useful in his couple of seasons with the club but competition is handy to have.

Matty Cash can operate there if called upon, but the chance to sign Zeffane on a free transfer should be a no-brainer.

The Algerian has played in victories over Tanzania, Ivory Coast and Nigeria at the African Cup of Nations; looking very good in the process.

Lamouchi knows what he would bring to the team having worked with him previously.

His arrival would add further steel and energy to Forest’s back four and it would be seen as a coup if the Reds can strike a deal.
