Hands up who expected Ben Watson to be a prominent pre-season figure for Nottingham Forest.

And to have taken the captain’s armband back.

Again.

I’m going to assume that there are not too many arms in the air.

Anyone who predicted this situation should probably go and get themselves a lottery ticket.

You are clearly psychic and able to tell the future.

To the rest sporting bemused looks, join the club.

Watson has become the City Ground equivalent of a cat with nine lives.

He must be approaching the end of that count.

Surely!

Choice

There is, however, still life in him yet.

And he is ready to make the most of his opportunity.

Aitor Karanka liked Watson enough to snap him up.

Martin O’Neill brought him back into favour upon inheriting the reins.

Sabri Lamouchi has done likewise.

With the Frenchman claiming that hasn’t even been a tough choice.

He has said in the Nottingham Post: “Watson is not a surprise for me. I hope he was not a surprise for you, either. He has a lot of experience. He is very positive.

“I would say the same thing about Michael Dawson. I was really pleased by the quality but also by the mentality.

“We need just to bring the right players in, into the right positions.”

Those final words suggest that Watson may be walking a tightrope once more.

He is flavour of the week, but maybe not the month.

Familiar

A familiar standing for the 34-year-old.

There is a role for him at present.

How long that remains the case is yet to be determined.

Lamouchi is in the market for fresh faces and is not limiting that search to any particular area.

Which means further midfield reinforcements could be drafted in.

Watson would be expected to slip down the pecking order.

He has been a fine player – an FA Cup winner – and still has plenty to offer someone.

Few thought Forest would be the ones buying into his qualities for 2019-20.

That, though, is the situation we find ourselves in and we really shouldn’t be surprised anymore.

More of us need to start paying attention in class so that we can raise our hands when asked questions with an apparently obvious answer!
