Nottingham Forest winger Sammy Ameobi says that he wasn’t surprised by Tiago Silva’s moment of brilliance which saw the Reds defeat Fleetwood Town in the EFL Cup.
The Portuguese attacker smashed high into the roof of Alex Cairns’ net to earn Forest a second-round date with Derby County at the City Ground.
Silva was one of just two players to keep their place from Saturday’s draw with Leeds United and he rewarded his manager’s faith by netting his first Forest goal.
Ameobi played the full 90 minutes for the first time since his free transfer from Bolton Wanderers and he had nothing but praise for the little magician.
He told Seat Pitch: “Tiago is a very talented player and we see that on the training pitch every day. He’ll be a big player for us this season.”
Ameobi was one of a number of players added to the squad during the summer. Given that the squad has a fresh feel to it there is bound to be a settling in period.
The 27-year-old does feel that things are beginning to take shape on the pitch, however.
He continued: “We’ve signed a lot of players so you’re always going to need that time to work together and the manager wants us to play a certain style of play. We need to buy into it and that’s what we’re trying to do. It’s not going to work immediately but we are beginning to find our feet.”
Ameobi looked lively throughout the contest, tormenting the Fleetwood defenders and he believes he is starting to settle into his new environment.
“I was happy with the opportunity to come here and I feel I am getting fitter with every game. It’s the start of the season now and I’m raring to go.”
